Trade Deadline Day in the Hobby

cut

Trade deadline day can always be an interesting day in the hobby.  When big names move or a team acquires new players, we see the requests and sales start hitting the market.

Depending on the team collectors out there, once a trade happens, someone starts search for previous jerseys of a player their team just recently acquired.  On the reverse side, if a player is moved that is in a team collector’s collection, that jersey may be listed quickly.  Player collectors can be biting their fingers, hoping that if their player is moved, its to a team that has a great jersey program.

Its always fun to keep an eye on the trade deadline in the NHL to see the demand change for players and see what items will start to get listed for sale.  Sometimes its minutes after the transaction, sometimes its days, but many are watching the trade reports.

All-Star Jerseys and Player Tracking

NHLCA212_HP_DT_A

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey utilized a system to track player data while on the ice.  It is said that the 2019 All-Star game will be using this same technology prior to the estimated league-wide roll-out next year.

The All-Star game’s garbage to gear jerseys may now include an RFID tag somewhere in the jersey to allow the “eye in the sky” to keep tabs on the data being collected regarding player positioning, speed, trajectory, etc.

What’s unknown is if this will be jersey specific data or simply player specific data or where the data will be stored and if it will be accessible.  One thing is clear for jersey collectors, the more this data is collected and becomes common place and accessible, we could see a valuable resource to our hobby to identify jerseys and potentially equipment used in key moments of hockey history.
