I usually try to spread out our collector interviews a bit, but we have had a bunch of great sessions this summer and I felt it would be best to get them shared so during the season, we can talk collecting and hockey with collectors we now know a little bit more about. Ryan Moen is no exception, he is definitely a collector you will want to get to know.
GameWorn.us: What do you do for a living?
Ryan Moen: I am a national recruiter based out of Minneapolis.
GW: What is your favorite beer?
RM: Lately its been Coors Light but anything that is cold and wet will do.
GW: What is your favorite team?
RM: College: North Dakota Fighting Sioux. NHL: LA Kings
GW: Who is your favorite player?
RM: Matt Greene
GW: When and how did you get started collecting?
RM: I’ve always been collecting sports memorabilia (cards, autographs, bobbleheads, etc…) but I didn’t get involved into game worn stuff until about four years ago.
GW: What makes up the bulk of your collection?
RM: I’ve moved away from collecting the little stuff and now I focus only on game worn jerseys (and one helmet). My main focus is on North Dakota Fighting Sioux jerseys (from any year) but I do have one NHL jersey (Matt Greene).
GW: If money was no issue, what is the one jersey you would want?
RM: North Dakota jerseys can get pretty spendy but are still within my budget but there are two jerseys out there that I know I would never be able to get. 1 is Ed Belfour’s ’87 Fighting Sioux jersey from when they won the national championship and the 2nd one would be Tony Hrkac’s jersey from the same year.
GW: What is your favorite jersey in your collection?
RM: Probably my Matt Greene Sioux jersey and my Matt Greene Kings jersey. There is a guy out west that has Greene’s home jersey from the same year as my Greene away jersey that I would like to have.
GW: What is your favorite thing about the hobby?
RM: All the people I have met. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be able to talk to someone and have an instant connection all because of a jersey. I also find myself going to hockey games now and checking out peoples jerseys instead of watching the games.
GW: Do you go to or have you gone to any Expos/Shows?
I go to the MN game worn jersey expo that Dave Frechette puts on at Tom Reids (down the street from the XCEL Energy Center). This was my first (and only) expo I went to and it is a fun time. I’ve met some awesome people here and consider them friends. IF you are in the St. Paul area the event is on Oct 11th and it starts at 12PM but get there early!
GW: What would you like to see for the future of the hobby?
RM: The bickering/backstabbing/falsifying that is among people. Lately its become so bad that I have tried to distance myself from certain collectors because of falsifying jerseys and trying to pass them on as real deals. I would like to see more people help each other out instead of asking “what’s in it for me”. A lot of jerseys will come and go but the people you meet will last forever.
GW: What are your hobbies outside of collecting?
RM: I like hunting, fishing, softball and basically anything that involves being outside (especially in the winter time).
